West Of Memphis (2012) Amy Berg

The follow on from the Paradise Lost Trilogy I posted earlier is in my opinion absolutely essential viewing, however this documentary is very different in nature from the original trilogy in that it does very little to continue the timeline (apart from the last ten minutes or so). It is not so much a synopsis of events as it is a retrospective on everything that proceeded in the case; as well as this the production values are obviously much higher now than the previous three movies. My biggest concern going into this, having watched the trilogy recently, was essentially sitting down to watch repeated archive footage that I just observed in the last two days. Thankfully this is not the case. I would say that despite dealing with events that occurred in the previous three movies, it is through new interviews and new perspectives with the advantage of looking over almost twenty years of evidence and legal proceedings holistically, and I find that it is with this holistic interpretation of the entire case from beginning to present day, coupled with the higher production values, that the emotional levity of what happened to everyone involved really hits the hardest; and for this reason I believe this is the strongest of all the documentaries (my own personal experiences with false witness testimonies may also play a factor here...) . It is also more than likely the closest sense of finality you will get on the case of the West Memphis 3. I will not post a trailer like I usually do, if you watch the original trilogy then you will obviously watch this, if you have not seen the original trilogy then you have no business watching a trailer for this, so rather I will post a trailer for a movie I'm sure we ALL will have very strong opinions on by the end of the year! :)
