Grand Hotel (1932) Edmund Goulding (reviewed by Jason Presents)

I was genuinely surprised by this one. The acting is nowhere near as hammy as the usual 1930's affair, and its probably the earliest example of portmanteau style that I can think of, didn't think they existed in the 30's to be honest.. anyways the plot is simple and the acting straightforward and I felt like I actually cared about some of the characters in this - rare for a movie this old.

  1. Save me from reading through Wiki, what the hell is portmanteau?

  2. its kinda like a grammatically incorrect way of combining words based on sounds, like motel or cotel etc. In movie terms its usually like Short Cuts or Pulp Fiction style of intersecting short stories. :)
