Dans La Maison (2012)

This was our movie night movie tonight chosen by me, I'll give everyone's scores first for Pat's benefit and mine at the bottom. Aindriu - 5. Shane - 5. Mary - 7. Ger - 7.5. Ross - 8.
I enjoyed this movie I have to say. Aindriu and Shane both state the story is predictable and they are very much correct in doing so. The story is simplistic and as they pointed out probably inspired by Allen (certainly not a bad inspiration at least). However for me it is not the story that drew my attention but the playful style in which it was delivered, sometimes having you guess what is reality and what is fiction with some genuinely hilarious moments and clever dialogue. The movie is French in every sense of the word, choosing to place emphasis on the nature and purpose of storytelling as opposed to the story itself, and it is in this that I feel the film finds its own creativity. Without giving the movie away the main protagonist is not a failed author, rather one who never truly aspired to be great and uses the boy and his stories as a vector for his unfulfilled literary ambitions, constantly pointing out when the boys story journey's into the predictable or mundane in a quirky self referential style. It certainly does not reach the heights of Allen's best movies but does surpass many in my opinion (then again the man has made almost 50 movies so that wouldn't be very hard).  With a movie of this type personal taste plays a big factor I think, therefore I feel all the above scores are justified. My personal score is -
